    Very interesting! I think that he is not the only one still practising, since I have seen footage of an Austrian pipe borer, who had spoon augers. I would be especially interested in seeing how they are forged.interested in seeing how the augers are forged. The auger with the adjustable cutter was noteworthy. Remarkable to think that the tubes’ lifetime is a century! Elm is durable and so is alder, I think, but I didn’t catch what wood is used.

    Judging from the bark, the wood color, & texture as it comes out, & the sap ring around the outer edge of the face he's boring I'd say it's white pine. Not sure that it would have been used in the past as it's not as good as many other woods, as you noted. It may just be a good demonstration wood.
