Interesting use for white rouge. My go-to minimalist finish for wood is Dead Flat varnish from Modern Masters. Less discoloration than similarly advertised finishes like General Finish's Flat Out Flat or Minwax's Ultra Flat. The can specifies not to use it on raw wood, but I have spoken with the manufacturers and they said that it's acceptable for certain species. Even after four coats, I still get the ultimate compliment: "You should really finish that".

    Hey Jon,

That's actually really interesting...it costs a bit so I'll have to keep that in my amazon cart till my wife's not looking (ha!). I remember a couple years ago asking a woodworking store employee if something like that existed and he shook his head. While I really like the rouge for small things...it's a lot to do something larger. I'll have to do something with this stuff. Thanks a lot...great tip! Shows how the internet is a much better way to get information.

Yes, $110/gallon isn't great. However, you can use it as a topcoat over other finishes to flatten them.

Have you ever tried EEE ultra-shine followed by Shellawax? Works great on small pieces. I use it on pens.
