    I was rather hoping to see the lathe operating, I suppose it is a reproduction in Paris’s Temple to Science (note pedantic addition of s to apostrophe)

    Use an apostrophe + s for singular nouns (sea, sky), common nouns ending with s (tigress, mistress), and irregular plural nouns (women, children).
    Use only the apostrophe for proper nouns ending with s (Tess, Jesus, Texas) and regular plural nouns (cars, protestors).

    My observation is that almost any punctuation "rule" has a barrel of exceptions, variations, and national and geographic differences. Within reason, do what does the best job of conveying the intended meaning.

    The one important exception, one of the most common writing errors seen, is the almost universal misuse of "its" and "it's".
