1813 inverted flintlock pistol - photo

    1813 inverted flintlock pistol.

An inverted flintlock pistol designed by English gunsmith, Joseph Egg, 1813. Egg inverted its mechanism in order to improve sighting targets, however the design failed to catch on due to a number of problems (powder falling out, flash directed downwards often burnt hand, awkward reloads).

What a clever innovation, perfectly positioned so the powder will fall out of the pan when the frizzen is raised, err lowered.

Of course, this minor problem could be solved by wetting the powder in the pan so it sticks in place. Wait,...

That's the point, that cloud of falling (fine) powder gives you easier and better ignition - that is if it ignites at the first try

BTW - jerries introduced their first (target?) unterhammer rifles about 60 years earlier(well, make it 80 - if we count smoothbore originals made by Ludwig Molenbeck).
