    Work or starve with impending depression. Must have cost him (ok okdon't say an arm or a leg) a bomb in those days. Surely prosthetic items were out of working class finance realms in that era? I knew a guy in 1970's who upgraded his wooden leg for an aluminium prosthetic and he was wealthy but it was the only time I heard him complain about money.
