I made a hand-held stamp alignment jig out of aluminum and put a couple magnets in it to help hold the stamp during setup. (Still have to hold it when striking, of course.)
I really like your setup for using the X travel for spacing.
This is a great idea, it can be adapted for any size of letter/number punch and and some simple measurements and calculations can work out the travel for each letter to get the kerning right. Well done.
I like it …will make use of the idea as hand stamping has always been challenging
thanks for the feedback, appreciated

Most fonts have an associated kerning table. Such a table contains many two letter combinations that may occur in the associated language. With each pair is an associated plus/minus increment to apply when this pair is printed.
As I understand it, there are no strict algorithms for determining the value of these 'kerns', rather they are determined by esthetic judgement.
It would be good if someone familiar with printing could establish a kerning table for the typical metal letter stamp set. Shouldn't be too much trouble since most of these sets contain only capital letters. This forum would be the perfect place to publicize such a table.
