I remember seeing large hoover craft being tested just east of Beaumont, Alberta, Canada, some 50-55 years ago. They were awesome to watch!

These things use four gas turbine engines for main power, and two for backup. This page has a link to the PDF document describing how they keep all that sand and water from destroying the engines.
