Actual Romans invented very little from what I have read, they were however extremely successful at hiring people who could build things - Or making them slaves which was more common. Most of the pieces of the Colosseum and other structures was also appropriated from other lands that they had conquered.

It doesn't sound too different from today except slavery is called outsourcing or subcontracting!
