The recess is actually a grinding relief, the two pieces were put together and the 1/4" wide X 5/32" dp. grind relief was cut, they were then disassembled heat treated and ground all over, then reassembled with the 2 dowel pins and 3 socket head cap screws, and then reground all over again, I didn't take a picture of the process but I made a little sketch, hope this clarifies things for you.
