The battle to stop oil drilling has been going on for at least 50 years that I am aware of. Given that it the least damaged by modern man place on the face of the planet I'm hoping it stays that way. Personally I'd like to see fishing banned from the area as well.
The harvesting of Krill alone from the Auckland Islands up has drastically affected wildlife.

I used to work at a coal terminal. Pretty neat. There are a ton of different types of coal, some of them are chemically unstable. They have to spray them with water regularly or they can spontaneously combust in the presence of oxygen. Weird.

Also synthetic coal as a byproduct from the oil and gas industry.

I look at furnaces such as the Fluidyne which are clean burning but here in NZ a major waste disposal facility using the technology to convert an old disused coal-fired power station,(the old Huntly East),was stopped dead by the greenie eco-terrorists. It would be nice if only facts and not emotions were considered when making important decisions. Now the problems of waste disposal have been exacerbated with the same greenie eco-terrorists jumping up and down yelling and screaming that we need to stop burying rubbish or at least don't do it anywhere they are affected. Putting a stop to Waste to Energy solutions really helps.
Still wouldn't want any mining in Antarctica.
I didn't know about the coals that needed to be kept wet.

Around here they were protesting windmills because birds or something, and then shot down a huge concrete recycling plant. I think Sweden has the right idea. They have a massive waste-to-energy program. They burn trash and turn it into electricity. It's been so successful that they're importing garbage from other countries.
