1971, the Moon. The feather drop is fun, and earth shattering simultaneously. How many facets operated correctly for that to take place? A scientist [without any means to prove theory beyond mathematics, logic and supreme reasoning] never finished his quest, or withdrew conclusions.
So when Cdr. Scott commented "Galileo was right...", I can't help but think were we'd be now, if he and contemporaries had been heeded more carefully.

"In the end, Galileo pushed so hard that he was called to the Inquisition where he was given a firm slap on the wrist for meddling in theology as a layman and was put under house arrest for the rest of his life in Florence’s countryside."

Seems to me that the church meddling in science is the real problem. (I note with some satisfaction that it has, in recent times, remained relatively silent on such subjects as the big bang, evolution and genetic structure.)

Considering his stubborn nature and distaste for faith-based descriptions of the universe, they couldn't have chosen a more perfect piece of his anatomy to preserve and display.

Few things please one more [given they think for themselves] when an individual creates tangible or realistic examples countering practices of ANY institution; another when proof sets things aright.

And I can suppress references to comedic interpretations of 'The Inquisition'; but not for long...

They could have also done a better job of philosophically integrating science and religion, such that an anti-science position doesn't gain strength. Even something like: "God created the universe, using science" would be an extraordinary improvement that both religious and non-religious people could live with.

We have some interesting theories, here is one about denouncing that plastic rice is made in China.
    .

Interestingly, Here in Aus we have lost many dogs and some cats from plastic in their processed food. The reason being that the tags from cows get ground up instead of removal before processing.

Go figure is the modern cliche that comes to mind.

Man on the moon Is a question of best practice, In 1969 ships still ran on steam, jet engines were in there infancy in fact we had only just developed fusion. How can any engineer in all honesty state that we had the technology to send a man into space and land whilst having the technology to re launch from the moon when there was no data, knowledge of the moons environment or experience in which to base this tech on. The Russians had launched over 300 rockets and killed as many crews. If the moon landing took place then they were bloody lucky or bloody stupid. Why do we not go back anymore, some believe that aliens told the moon landing party to never return or else. I'm not saying they were not mad enough to try - just to beat the Russians. The UK space centre at Spadeadam in Cumbria was where Britain built Blue Streak aka Ariane rocket http://www.armaghplanet.com/blog/blue-streak-uks-cold-war-rocket.html I live 1/2 a mile from a museum which houses parts of the Blue Streak and 10 miles from RAF Spadeadam, now a military low flying training area. Just think we Brits could have beat the US to the moon.

    what?

OUCH.... that hurt ....I fell off my chair laughing. You Brits also could have won that one war back in the late 1700's also, but you didn't.

You cannot be serious? There are so many errors in your thinking.

Any engineer in all honesty will tell you that ships have NEVER run on steam. Things have run on coal, wood, fuel oil, or nuclear power for years. Ships or trains or automobiles or farm equipment or factories etc. have never on steam. Steam is simply the media used to transfer heat energy from any source to rotational mechanical power through a piston/cylinder, or a turbine mechanism.

Jet engines have been around since 150BC. If you are talking about jet turbine engines they are a bit newer. Serious development taking place in the early 1900's and began flying in the 1940's. YES, jet engine designs are still being developed and improved. They are better now than they were in 1969. They will continue to improve.

The same is true for internal combustion engines. They are constantly improved and made smaller, use less fuel, more power, more reliable.

It is the nature of mankind to seek better ways to do things. We do not always succeed. Sometimes we take a step backward. Sometimes "we" do really stupid things. But then it is easy to look back and see the errors made over the years.
