You are correct, both springs are under tension, but the one that closes the latch is under greater tension. However, if you use the correct size spring it shouldn't be a problem as the latch is only slightly pulled back to latch into place. A spring that is too long or too short will definitely be a problem.When selecting a spring, consider outer diameter, wire diameter, inner diameter, and overall length, including length inside hooks and spring length.
