    That’s all good when it’s new, but the spring that closes the latch is under greater tension and will break first. What happens then?

    You are correct, both springs are under tension, but the one that closes the latch is under greater tension. However, if you use the correct size spring it shouldn't be a problem as the latch is only slightly pulled back to latch into place. A spring that is too long or too short will definitely be a problem.When selecting a spring, consider outer diameter, wire diameter, inner diameter, and overall length, including length inside hooks and spring length.     That true if the springs have different rates, and if the hooks on the ends have been reannealed, but not if they both have the same rate.
