Lots of guys like to build belt sanders, and the trick for that is getting a free treadmill from Craigslist, and using the motor to power the belt sander. Plus treadmills often have a separate incline motor (so that someone can simulate walking/jogging "uphill"). The incline motor can be used as a belt tensioner.
