    You come up on a spot in the road in dark shadow and notice that half of the road is washed or eroded away, wouldn't that be enough to make you just a little bit cautious of a dark shadow completely across the road just a little ways ahead?

    It would me...that shadow was way darker than the shadows of the trees.
