Oh, we have defiantly earned what we have. Or rather sat back too complacent while allowing other to tell us not to do things. Walking away from workplace apprenticeship programs with the introduction of child labor laws and establishments like OSHA has caused the biggest downfall. This is not to say that children should be exploited or utilized for profitable gains, or that certain safety guidelines need to be observed.
The Japanese figured out how to teach common sense. One way is repetitive exposure to things until a child learns that doing some things one way could result in possible breakdown or injuries but by simply altering their position or stance or the way they go about their task yields a more positive outcome.
The eastern countries don't have to put do not drink warning lables on shampoo bottles.
