CNC router gets a new spindle mount

I knew it was the weak link in my machine but it was working when all of a sudden
things were just out of wack. The cutter kept going deeper and deeper. Thought
the bit was slipping in the collet but that was not it. Finally noticed the maple mount
for the router was cracked. Actually it had separated. Now is the time to get out
that faceplate for the mini lathe. The mill was only used with a mini pallet to put
the 4 grooves in the mount that provide clearance for the pins on the router.

Kinda forces you to fix something that knew you needed to update anyway.
When I built the CNC machine I did not have a lathe or a mill so now there
nothing to keep me from making one out of aluminum.

The pictures tell the story and after one day I have a proper mount for the
Porter Cable router. Cutting will start over tomorrow!

Have you ever though of making a spindle for your router table? By the way it is a very nice machine you have. Does it have all three axis? The reason I ask I have a set up a guy was making and I got a good deal and could not pass it up. I put a router on it and found I had too much run-out with a router and the limited size of tooling was disappointing. It has been sitting for years now and I have a crazy idea of stripping everything off of it and set it under my Mill Rite, it is just a little bit low for my 6'2" frame.

Actually I have made a spindle for my CNC machine. Works great and I use it for larger bits. Lately I have been using 1/8" carbide two flute bits which I like to run a bit faster than my home brew spindle. Routers can be less than precise. I have 3 Porter Cable routers and only one is good enough for my CNC machine. It just happens to be the one I replaced the spindle bearings on. So with the new spindle bearings and selecting from several collets I find a set that has very low runout.

Yes it has 3 axis. Never went to 4 or 5 and probably won't. I just like it for cutting out flat plate and using it for accurate layout of holes etc. Everything else is done on manual machines.
