    CNC Router and Plasma combo

I build a cnc router and plasma combination to save the space for one of them. I used steel pipes to build the frame and the gantry. For the most connections I had used screws to avoid that parts get crooked after welding and so I am able to adjust most of the parts.

Thank you for sharing your outstanding build, Sam. First-rate documentation and camera work. In Video #2 @ 8:53 you mention you will explain all parts in more detail. However, components are never mentioned again and there is no Bill of Materials. Is there any way to find out more about the parts in your system?

A fundamental way of judging the quality of any x-y system is to view or measure the cross-over of 2 axis (i.e., when a motor reverses direction). This occurs at 4 positions when creating a circle. From what I can see in video 8, the stainless circles are perfect as well as the various rings you routed in wood. This would indicate very high quality system design, and components and software with little to no backlash . . . so a few questions: :-)
1.) You mentioned MasterCam . . . did you use that software?
2.) You mentioned the racks may not be as good as you would like. How do you compensate for backlash of the racks? Does your software do backlash compensation?
3.) Considering cost vs. benefit would you still use racks, or recirculating ball screws, or?

Hi, yes I haven't shown my parts until now. There is one part missing I want to make an overview video about the machine but I haven't made it yet (there are so many things to do...).

I'm using an arduino with a shield for estlcam (software), 280Ncm motors, a 48v power supply, modul 1 rack and pinion and linear rails with 20mm (more in the next video I hope I will get it in the next weeks)

1.) I'm using Estlcam (really simple to leran for beginners). Thanks for the tip with MasterCam I will have a lookat it.
2.) I don't have a backlash compensation. I had everything aligned as good as possible and hoped for an acceptable result. And for me the results are good enough for now.
3.) I don't really now It's hard to say but maybe I would spend the money for ball screws to get a more precision (and also a much more quiet) machine if I would build it again.

By the way thank you very much for your comment!

Thanks for getting back with the additional information, Sam. I watched all your videos again and gained better understanding of your build and more confidence in taking on such a project. I appreciate the time you spent in documentation the build and then sharing it with us. The only change I am considering is bending the sides of the sheet metal pan and welding only the corners, saving all that welding. Thanks for the specs on the motors that really helps.

Yes it's much better to bend the sides of the water pan, but I don't have the possibilities to do that, so I welded it. Next time I would only make a few welding points and seal the pan with silicone than the sheet metal would not be so crooked.
