If you've got the bucks and are willing to spend them I would say that is probably the best way to go. Expensive wood lathes often have three phase motors and VFD speed control.
3 phases motors and vfd give you more speed range and flexibility , not much more money than single phase when the right deal come thru.
Project/test/error for me is the opportunity to do better next time, from idea to action.
