You have to carefully think out the parting off step of the making the nut.

I'm intrigued, what are the traps with the parting off, wouldn't it be relatively easy to position a rod for the cutoff part to fall onto to avoid getting spun by the minor diameter ?

Just chamfering the edges before you part off. No chance to flip around later. Any smoothing out of what you have sone on the nut will be a little harder than normal. Just takes thinking all the operations through before you go for it.
