DIY Garden Trug - Full Build

DIY Garden Trug - Full Build-img-2847-web.jpg

Does anyone actually know what a "Garden Trug" is? I didn't until my wife Susan handed me a set of instructions and pictures she downloaded from "Instructables" and said "I want one." So.....off to the workshop I went with my marching orders and this is what materialized. A "Garden Trug" is a tool used by small farms and homesteads for gathering or harvesting small quantities of fruits or vegetables from the fields/gardens for use in the farmhouse kitchen (so I'm told).

This is the "garden trug" I just finished building. This full length video features the various steps I took during construction. The plans were downloaded and forwarded to me from my wife along with marching orders to get hot and get this thing built! Here's the link for the instructions if you would like to build one for yourself: https://www.instructables.com/Garden-Trug/

Note that I varied from the plans slightly by using bits and pieces of scrap wood I had around the shop instead of the full-sized lumber called for. I simply milled and glued up the small scraps into the sizes of wood needed for the build. It took more time and extra work, but I didn’t buy any of the materials for the project. Even the hardware cloth was a left-over piece of scrap from our chicken coop build.

    Here's the video:

Now the mighty question is, will she actually use it or just grab a plastic grocery bag or 2 instead. My Grandma always just grabbed the tail of her apron for gathering almost everything

She actually uses it, Frank! By the way; here in Maine, plastic bags have been outlawed. You either bring your own reusable bags to a store or pay for paper bags or reusable ones.

paper bags have reusable qualities as well, great for covering text books using as outer package wrapping to protect the decorative wrapping when mailing gifts. by inserting 3 or 4 of the ones with handles together and wrapping the handles together with tape to make heavy duty disposable carry totes or Halloween carry bags for candy. but other than that plastic bags not the extra thin ones from Dollar General have far more reusable qualities but sadly far too many people just huck them in the waste bin as soon as they get home.

Neat design. Asked my wife if she would like one.
Nope, she just uses her stainless steel milk pails. Don't tip over, have nice handles and easy to clean and sanitize before milk time.
Actually some of the most useful tools in the house...
