The original one is only held in by friction at the squared end near the gears. It came out with a light tug with pliers. The link that I made is loose, so falls out if the opening is pointed straight down. After a total of about 2 hours of use, the nail is only slightly worn, so about the same as the original part after 10 hours of use. These rotary tools are low-torque, so most anything of similar material would work.
