Excavator works to free Ever Given ship stuck in Suez Canal - photo
-
I heard it may be there longer than expected. Now I can see why.
-
They are going to need a longer stick on that excavator!!!! There is A LOT of ship not showing, wedged in the dirt.
-
American military have said they are on standby with equipment just waiting to hear from the Egyptian government and apparently several other countries have offered help as well. Considering the international ramifications of a blockage here if I was the Egyptian Prime Minister I would be asking for help from the international community.
-
YUP that will work just fine come back a bit later ,much much later
-
The "Ever Given" yea she given alright! Given everyone a headache.
One Excavator? Come on Guys, you can do better than that.

Sure is! A ship this size could draw 35' to 40' of draft. A better approach would bring a dredge alongside. They come in all sizes, including portable units used in farm ponds.
-
If they could round up 10 million horsepower on each side and cable each end to pull it straight. I am just full of all kinds of brilliant ideas , but apparently they don’t need my help since they haven’t called.
-
Wonder what that steel cable draped on the ship bow just above the water line is? Leftover remnant from some work long past? A bit much to small to be of much help now.
-
Excellent idea, running a cable over the bulb on the bow. That way there's ZERO chance of the ship suddenly breaking free, rotating on its axis thus getting jammed in the REVERSE angle. My experience in such issues is minimal (read ZERO) but as a suggestion, perhaps a coffer dam built a quarter mile away in either direction might work. Pump water into the contained area would raise the ship allowing it to be realigned with the canal. OR - get ANOTHER excavator.
-
I Think I Can, I Think I Can
-
Apparently that's a Komatsu 20T excavator - great promotional piece for Komatsu. As long as they're STILL in business by the time this project is finished!
-
There isn't much of a history of this type of grounding from which to draw plans of attack for this one. If they don't get it right the first time and the ship capsizes or breaks up, they'll have an even bigger problem.
Unloading the ship is a tricky proposition. The ship has ~20,000 containers on board stacked as high as 300 feet. They would need to be unloaded in a precisely computed order to avoid capsize. There are no unloading cranes in the area and, even if there were, how long would that take?
Fortunately, the canal has no locks so it's subject to the tides. Perhaps that, in combination with some pushing and pulling from the land, will get it loose.
-
It is also NOT a good idea to empty the ballast tanks as some have suggested, as that could cause it to turn over also.
Not a simple project to be sure. I hope none of you are waiting for any products to arrive from China!!!

They should get this guy to dig them out:

That is funny, we have a silly dog that does crazy things like that. I am often amazed at the things they do. Would love to know what goes though those minds!!!
They are for sure very good at training US!!!

In re to the aground Ever Given, how can Suez be without a few heavy tugs?

Ever Given ship stuck in Suez Canal
The full moon is on Sunday. If she's not floating by then the next spring tide is April 11th.

Love it. Some dogs are pure crazy.

The TikTok sea shanty craze, AKA #shantytok (see here for an example) combines nicely with the Ever Given debacle.

Snit-snot, Twatter, Instaslam, click bait, social media in general, and I are polar opposites. Like pro sports, my interest is coupled with their concern for me, in case none of that's apparent.
However, some leaks through, vis-à-vis;
When younger, my concern was avoiding the common slide into crotchety old SOB.
But here I am, killing it!

In breaking new: In addition to excavation efforts, the "Worm" moon last night caused a higher than usual high tide and the stern broke free. They're keeping it from drifting hoping they can free the bow soon. Once removed there will be several (?) days of dredging to repair the damage done and prevent other ships from bottoming out. Over 250 ships are waiting and many others decided to go the old route around the "Cape of Good Hope" around the southern tip of Africa, over twice the travel time (depending on destination). The biggest heartbreak of all is the dozen or so containers one one barge containing thousands of cutting edge sexual aids! MORE TO COME!
-
Good Hope, cutting edge, and MORE TO COME.
If that's not a late night monologue setup, I don't know what is.
Worm moon?, that's gonna have to go it alone. Not common nautical parlance.
-
Worm moon is more of a farmer's reference. Early spring when the worms "return" also called sugar moon because it's around when the maple sap really starts flowing. but I thought worm was more fitting with the double entendres in the bit. :)

That's funny. A classic example of why we wonder what makes some people tick.

Even funnier, that scene came to mind days ago trying to get 8 x 12 floor grates around corner of forklift ramp through my rollup door and indoors. Used my Vermette hoist, those grates weigh 200 pounds!

Our new house has a long, narrow food storage area. At the far end is room for a freezer...just. We managed to get the plumber to NOT put the water meter there and we verified it will fit with the appropriate maneuvers. Our sponsor and friends will be putting that in there shortly, hope they send pictures of figuring out how it fits. :) :)
We simulated it with our CAD system which is how we know it fits.

Did your CAD system simulate replacing the freezer if it goes bad? Or moving it after other other shelving etc is installed in the room? Or allowing access to various components for repair and maintenance?
I hope so.....
-
We plan to do the same thing except the small chest freezer we have will be 8" narrower than the hallway I'm building for it to sit in. It fits through a door and empty it only weighs about 50 lbs!

Да конечно.
I may look like a complete idiot but I'm only half, the other half just naps a lot.
:)

Start off with taking on as much water ballast as the tanks will hold this will add so much weight to the ship it will compress the bottom of the canal then pump out all of the ballast connect a ship and several tugs to the stern and do the same for the bow pull in opposite directions problem solved
-
NOW I don't feel so bad about removing the door frame of our laundry room (37") to install our upright freezer (39" - narrowest point) Hopefully, if we sell the house with appliances as part of the deal, the next guy will figure it out when it finally dies. Ya gotta remember, there's a good chance a "Gen X'r" may very well be the new owner!
