Don't know for sure, but here are some thoughts...
Avoid getting bits of cork in the wine. Remember, that cork is sixty years old.
Prevent someone from refilling the bottle with Mogen David and reselling it for what the label says.
Prevent stirring up the residue in the bottle.
If the bottle was stored properly, cork end slanted down, the cork may have residue on it that could contaminate the wine if disturbed.
