Most likely either his Raciever/comms radio and/or video camera to see what happened. Could also be reaching in to get the fire extinguisher so he can limit the damage to the car. When you have hundreds of hours into building a car and tens of thousands of dollars, you think differently than non-racers.

FYI, the fire suits have a rating of either 3 or 10 seconds before 2nd degree burns occur in a flash over situation. Single layer suit vs double layer. Gloves and shoes have similar ratings, but usually have sued or leather components with Nomex underneath.

Also Nomex long underwear and head-sock will give you a little more time, but not much.
