Formula One car brake assembly - photo

Had to look hard to find it but there actually is a caliper and rotor buried in all that auxiliary cooling

It's mostly energy recovery bits.

Ok, is it an electric or hybrid vehicle then? Sure looks like a lot of un-sprung mass to me

It's an F1 hybrid car, zillion dollar carbon fiber isn't very heavy.

The rules dictate that you have to have it. It is not hybrid as that is generally thought of. It is braking energy recovery which is stored and can be used to give an acceleration boost when needed.

Sounds complicated just to go fast. but I'm not a racer or even a racing enthusiast. I understand the function of regenerative braking often found in EV and hybrid vehicles. But in those vehicles the amount of recovered energy is negligible for people who hardly ever use their brakes and just gently slow down before stopping. The whole mass+ kinetic versus inertia is completely lost for them, where as a couple 100 lbs of lower vehicle weight is a huge savings. Strip all of the little, seldom, and never used features out of their vehicles and they would nearly double their milage figures without doing anything.

It is not for going fast. It is about F1's desired image of going green. I doubt that it fools many people.
