    They could easily suffocate with all of the nitrogen purging the oxygen out of that pit.

    yeah, I was worrying about that too - later in the video you can see the flexi tube being used to control the atmosphere in the pit, but early in the video that's not evident.

    Since the atmosphere is already 78% nitrogen it doesn't take a very large amount of pure oxygen to displace enough of the nitrogen to sustain life. Co2 would be much more dangerous but that would not be able to quick freeze the water pressure in the pipe
