I've seen so many different ways of doing this. From sheeps foot rollers to high hoes to grinders.

The GIF seems to be speeded up. I would like to see the blade configuration that makes that possible.

I agree. If that is a regular blade say goodbye to the top rather quickly. Plus that was awfully pliable pavement.

A good grader operator would know how to rotate the blade 180°from normal as if he were going to grade while driving in reverse. Most graders can lay the blade down quite a bit Almost to horizontal. If you watch the vid in stop action the blade is not spun 180° so he is not using the cutting edge. But there is almost a brief glimpse of something that could be an attachment to the top of the blade with a cutting edge It is nearly impossible to see, and I could be mistaken about it even being there.
But logic would dictate there would have be some attachment with a cutting edge to get under the pavement.

Yup. Agree. Been around a few graders. Never operated. Just observed. And I agree about some kind of attachment.

He sure did catch up quickly to the guy cutting the pavement!

I've seen a homemade triangle-shaped boot with hardened edges doing something like this before. It didn't work anywhere near that quickly. The video doesn't allow a very good look at it. Completely agree with how the pavement is reacting. That is very not normal.

is "pavement" code for asphalt or some other bitumen composite material? - the broken edges are more black than grey, so I was thinking it was asphalt over a road base bed.

Basically yes. Asphalt is a better term.
