HOMEMADE "ENGINE" LATHE AND MILLING "HEAD"

This is my "ENGINE" LATHE / MILLING "HEAD" project.

This project is a continuation of my "HOMEMADE METAL WORKING LATHE" and based on the Pat Delany "MULTI MACHINE" concept.
Also see my "HOMEMADE 4 JAW CHUCK" project.

This design is similar to Smithy Lathe/Mill machines.

The Chevy 6 cyl. head is mounted to the front end of a slant 6 Mopar engine block
    standing vertically.

Between the Mopar 6 cyl. block and the 6 cyl. Chevy head are two
    pieces of 6 " channel iron welded together. pics 8, 9, 14

1/4" plate is welded to attach the lower channel iron to the front end of the
vertical block using 13 factory made threaded holes. pics. 8, 9, 18

The upper channel iron is drilled and tapped in 6 places to match
existing factory head bolt hles. Stops are welded to channel iron by the
exhaust ports. Clamps are bolted to the channel iron on the spark plug
side of the head. pics. 8, 14

The head can be located in two different positions and also swung out of
the way when not in use. Always support the Milling "Head" when changing position
or have at least 1 head bolt installed. pics 1, 8, 9, 18

5 1/2" channel iron is bolted to the front end of the head
where the thermostat housing normally bolts to the head using 3 existing
threaded holes. Gussets are drilled to match existing taped holes in the head and welded
    to the 5 1/2" channel. pics. 3, 11, 18

I made the drill arbor using parts from two Chinese drill presses. The
shaft is from a motorcycle front strut. Sealed ball bearings are used
top and bottom of the shaft. The telescoping drive shaft is made from 3/4" square tubing
over 1" x .100 wall square tubing. A Mopar crankshaft pulley drives the
    1" square tubing. pics. 2, 3, 5

A 6207 sealed ball bearing is used to locate the drive pulley. pics 6, 7

A 1725 rpm motor drives the arbor using step pulleys on the jackshaft and
    motor. pics. 15, 16

A cross slide made from a Chevy V8 head is on the horizontal engine
block. This is used for both lathe and mill functions. pics. 8, 12, 13

I am not going to put in a lot of specifics and measurements since most
likely your project will become different because of different parts being used.

Any project you build is at your own risk and liaibility. It's safety
and operation is your responsibility. I relinquish all
responsibility/liability in any project you build.

    Good luck and have fun!

    pkuphaldt,

That is quite the machine made from what appear to be old cast iron engine parts. It is unique and most likely solid. It is inspiring to say the least.
Great invention and thanks for sharing with us!
