Yeah those are Pain Level 3 on the Schmidt Pain Index. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schmidt_sting_pain_index along with desert harvester ants, which are nasty buggers. And they are wingless wasps, not ants. Back when I was in college I worked for Justin for a few years. Very interesting guy. We tried digging up a bumblebee colony one time so we could house it and study; I'll attest that bumblebees are a lot harder to get mad enough to sting you, but they hurt; and unlike honeybees, they can sting you more than once. They'll also go right through an ordinary bee suit. We do have tarantula hawks around here (up there with Bullet ants on the scale) but you have to work at it to get them to sting you...
