Hi Tony, I built a similar setup to your tumbler using a geared DC motor, it is dismantled at present after moving house. Like yours it works very well for preparing original fastenings prior to plating.
I have tried all sorts of media from silica sand for a polish to washed coarse sand and even fine shingle. Being only 400 yards from the beach I am spoilt for choice for free supply. If its for deburring of machined parts you may find a local powder coating shop for some blast media which could work in a tumbler.
