    Kola Superdeep Borehole - photos

    Dug by the Soviets in the 1970s, the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia was the deepest artificial point on earth at 2,262 meters (40,230 ft.) It was surpassed in 2008 by a 12,289-meter deep (40,318 ft.) oil well borehole off the coast of Qatar.

    2,262 meters equals 7,241.26 feet, not 40,230 feet as stated in the posting. Perhaps they meant 12,262 meters, which would be closer.

    At least they capped it so they will not have to dig a 40K foot parallel shaft to rescue some small child.

    Probably about 3 feet, just enough to keep the cap stable.
