    Lathe automatic stop switch arrangement

    Hi,
To protect my lathe and myself from crashing the tool against the front of my workpiece or chuck I mounted a second microswitch in series with te existing microswitch that switches of the lathe when opening the gear cover.
This second switch is operated by an adjustable spring loaded pushrod after making contact with the carriage.
I hope the pictures and movie explains it all.

So this shuts off power to the whole lathe? How do you take into account the amount of travel that still occurs after the power gets turned off?

Very cool. Been looking for a solution like this for a while now.

The amount of travel depends on the chosen speed for the chuck and I made it more or less as a safety device when I move the carriage by hand and come close to the chuck or front of a workpiece.

In my other post Automatic Disengage the leadsrcew half nut of my lathe you can see my solution to stop the carriage at any position I like with an accuracy of +/- 0,1 mm.

Both solutions can be used together so the latter disengage the feedscrew and the first stops the motor, works very fine.

    regards
    Hans

I keep thinking there's a way to use a motorcycle brake or clutch cable for this instead of that long threaded rod. A stop could be clamped on the ways and when the end of the cable meets it it would push or pull the cable and activate the switch. Or, you could put the switch on the stop clamp itself. Just some random thoughts.

Sure, but that is not what I had in my shop.
