It seems to have taken a long time to turn off the machine and then more time to finally release the chuck.

I agree, I guess it was just adrenalin from the accident that caused the first guy on the scene to grab hold of the spinning shaft to help the guy who was stuck instead of locating the off switch then opening the chuck

This was an unreal clip. I thought I was watching a bunch of monkeys that have never even seen a lathe before? Like others have said why did it take so long to shut the machine down? I have a 1946 Logan, one of the first ones built after the retooling. Even that machine has a large on off switch that is impossible to miss. And then why did it take so long for one of those monkeys to pick up the chuck key and open it? Also why did Einstein have to open it so many turns? The shaft was only about an inch in diameter? One 1/2 to a full turn would have been enough to release the man? Remind me to never occupy the same machine shop is this bunch of monkeys. I’ve never seen anything like this.

not even the guy who was using it, but that's not the point I was tying to make, seems a bit convenient that there just happened to be a camera there when something untoward happened.

My initial thoughts while watching was the same as Frank and my thoughts then went to the camera also.

Reminds me of a young friend (around 1980) came to work with a seek looking bandage on his noggin. I, of course showed concern, and asked what happened. He had been using a half inch drill under a low house and who needs a comanchie to get scalped when you have a 1Hp drill with jacobs chuck: I believe DIYers still dont need/use hair nets and forget confined spaces.
