Just like the first drill rig I built I designed in a pair of semi-truck brake chambers with the spring parking brake to activate the brake bands on the draw-works and used a wabco valve instead of the 6 ft long brake leaver. The first words out of the driller's mouth were it ain't oilfield I'm out of here. Now days many of the draw-works use air to activate the brakes. My second rig I incorporated water cooled disk brakes with huge 6 puck hydraulic calipers like I had seen used on the elevators of deep shaft mines The haters and doubters had a lot to say about them, but they are common on rigs now.
