Also a good thing is the automatic emergency stop brake was functioning. I saw a machine very similar to that on at a trade show in Guangzhou. If it is of the same type machine then that feed shoot leads down to a level below the floor they are working from. which grinds and pulverizes the ribbon of plastic back into granules to be reformed into product. the ribbon is the trimming from the edge of the product. If he had fell to the bottom of the shoot before the machine below stopped, he would have been nothing more than a mass of pulp in a matter of seconds He was very lucky in so many ways to have survived.
Never try to tell me it can't be done

I used to work on a salt mine. The union had fought for, and won, the ability to ignore lockout tag-out laws for their on site conveyors. And these were serious conveyors. Some were 300+ HP 60" wide troughing conveyors.

They didn't want to use normal rope grab e-stops. Didn't like 'em. Normally if you pull on the rope it flips the switch, the PLC kills the conveyor and you have to reset the switch, then radio the operator before the conveyor could start again. That's the NORMAL system, which has a high level of safety. What they wanted to use was a single strand of 14-ish AWG wire running the length of the conveyor. The wire was crimped with spade connectors periodically along the length. If you swat at the wire, the spade connector pulls out and the conveyor stops. Sounds crappy, but so far it serves the purpose. The problem is THIS WAS THEIR LOCKOUT TAGOUT SYSTEM. If someone crawled in between the belts to clean salt or swap out rollers or something, they would disconnect a spade connector. ANYONE could come along, reconnect the spade connector, and the conveyor would immediately start. Pure insanity.
