    Fortkentdad's Tools

    New to this forum

    Hello from frozen northern Canada

Been playing with tools all my life and as retirement gets closer I'm looking forward to more time in the shop.

Acquired a few power tools over the years, some new, some antique but still usable. New this year is a Dewalt Scroll Saw, Dewalt Mitre saw, and a table top belt & disk sander. Couple of years ago bought a small Dewalt table saw. I have a borderline antique radial arm saw (bought it well used about 25 years ago) still works. This summer my Dad gave me the lath his father, my grandpa used. Still has the 1932 owners manual. Had to take it apart to transport it home, still in pieces - a summer project as it will go in the garage. Also brought home a similar vintage drill press. That one I did put together and I'm using it. Gotta be at least 50 years old. Also have a small collection of older hand tools. None I use though.

Stumbled on this site when looking for how to make a DIY dust collection system. My new sander kicks up too much sawdust even with the shop vac attached. And it fills the bag too quickly.

Hi David - welcome to HomemadeTools.net

You sound like you have no lack of work in front of you!

How is the dust collector project going? Do you have any ideas collected so far?

    Hi David,

    Welcome!

Let's see a few pics of your vintage tools. It's great that you've got your grandfather's lathe - we'll be looking forward to following your progress in getting it running again.

Picked this up at Canadian Tire today - on sale for $10, if it does not work out handy to have. Looked at the standard pails with lids but none I saw had lids that snapped on tight enough for my liking. This one has clasps that snap the lid in place. Lid is not perfectly flat though so may not be best. Looked at a big funnel - but was not convinced it would work. Didn't remember to bring the dimensions of the PVC pipes needed, tried grabbing an attachment from the Shop Vac section and tried the PVC pipe they had, none would have fit. Hmmm. Will need to look again at what size pipe was used.

Once I get it made I'll post to the forum.

That's a good deal. Even if you don't use it for the dust collector, those pails are useful for a variety of homemade tool builds.

Well Jon you ask I deliver

Photos of a few of my older tools.
I've not made a hobby of collecting old tools I just held onto a few of these from my Dad (and Grandpa) as keepsakes.
No I have not looked into their history - if anyone knows anything about these tools love to hear about them.

    First the PLANE

The Plane - from Australia "A Pope Product" by Falcon (although Falcon may be the model name) is is a No. 5.

And I have two hand drills.

The one has no markings. The one with the open gear is a "RAY No. 3" (may be a letter before the R) and is by the "__ANLEY RULE AND LEVEL CO. of _EW BRITAIN CONN. U.S.A." My guess the Stanley tool co.

    Both are still functional.

The Lath has to be reassembled in the spring - have not dug my way out to the shed this winter yet. Maybe tomorrow I'll get to shovelling a path. But I do have the tools.

And I have a hand saw Dad gave me a while back. No story attached. And a level that has served well - no markings at all left on the level. The Saw says "MARRANTED SUPERIOR" (at least I think that's an 'M') New to this forum-old-tools-saw-close-dsc_5824-0001-2016-02-14t21_32_29.jpg

It has some detail work too. It needs to be sharpened. New to this forum-old-tools-saw-dsc_5822-0001-2016-02-14t21_32_22.jpg

And this is the level - look at that, my desk is on the level.

And this is the Drill Press
Yes it is assembled backwards. This is how it came to me. Not the original motor or motor mount. Some mod's were made. I also am going to have to rebuild that safety shield on top - looks like heck.

It is "The Driver" - ???
