The guy on the flat bed was still trying to guide the load after everyone else had bolted.

His outriggers were deployed. Also it looks like the cab got crushed.

The flatbed was about as close to the crane as it could get and still clear the outriggers. The boom was ab out as straight up as it could be. it is obvious the load had already been picked and swung to position so about the only 2 factors that could have saved the lift would to have used slightly shorted slings and kept the boom retracted some placing more of the crane weight closer to the centerline of the crane. Sometimes a quick reflex on the part of an operator can recover in these situations by rapidly cabling down and retracting the boom it makes for a loud landing and can do some damage, but the lift looked like it was salvage in the first place and the flatbed had a steel deck. A couple feet of boom retraction changes the CG quickly.

They are not familiar with the "Overkill Policy". They are adapted to the "Hand to Mouth Policy". Utilizing two or even three cranes to share the load would have been much, Much, MUCH cheaper than risk losing a single crane.
