An alternate solution yes, for those without dexterity to fold a short portion back under. However, paper clip makes it a two handed job for the next strip.
So you're erecting a carton, one hand currently occupied......

Tape dispenser guns are durable, aren't expensive, and do a good job holding tension on tape while laying down box flaps.
Foremost detail of securing cartons, compress the seams!

i fold the corner by about 1/2" - that's all that is needed to find the edge and get a start. - if it's cheap brown packing tape, I fold the entire width since it tears too easily
