I wonder where this trade show was. The ones I've been to in China, Italy, Turkey, Germany, Spain, The UK, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Romania, Australia, Dubai, Kuwait, Japan, Korea, and others always required areas where that type of exhibit was being displayed to cordoned off with a safety barrier if such a display was to be live and not static. I haven't been to a trade show in the USA in 30 years but I'm sure those would have the same safety measures.

I think I've seen these devices in Japan made out of bamboo.
