The liquid metal is poured into the path of high-pressure water, which atomized the metal. It's then dried into cakes, which are crushed into powder. The last part I understand completely. It's the water atomization that I cannot comprehend. Mind, blown.

As one with OCD and tactile dysfunctions (I am compelled to experience textures and shapes), my absolute favorite since I was a kid has been ball-burnished powdered steel. It's right up there with kitten belly fur.

They look like cam belt wheels, I spent 30 years in manufacture of sinter metal tooling and what you are seeing is the first stage called compacting often a second stage (new tooling) to final sizing is called repressing followed by heat treatment. The powder is dry and the tooling has tolerances of .0002 or .005mm on the complete profile to keep the powder from bypassing the tooling.

You find sintered components in almost everything these days from power tool parts and automotive parts, shock absorber valves, gun parts etc where high volume justifies the high cost of tooling.
Tons if info on the web the GKN site is good. https://www.gknpm.com/
