Okay, here is my second guess but I am running out of ideas. Perhaps the carved cork area fits the side of the neck of a violin and holds it softly and horizontally off the workbench while the rubber strap retains the neck in place. I could imagine a similar pair for holding the violin waist area (or whatever the narrow midsection is called) also horizontally above the workbench so the violin back is not scratched.
