The landslides from such cliffs are contributing to the flooding and eventual failure of the Three Gorges Dam.
This effort is a fools' errand, since nothing will prevent hydrologic pressure from underground plus the earthquakes from forcing landslides.

Landslides can cause massive waves, like tidal waves but amplified to be much worse by the valleys downstream from the dam. I believe they are trying to prevent that. There is a fictional movie about this type of failure on Netflix called The Wave.

3 Gorges reservoir is 375 miles long and about 600 feet deep at the dam. How long would that even take to drain all that water?

Why not demolish it and drive it away. long term solution(although expensive), but no future maintenance or risk

Yup. Same. To the point where I'm not entirely convinced it isn't CGI.
