I used to wrench for a large landscape contractor. They were located down a steep grade off the highway. One day I heard the big old dump truck returning from picking up a load of gravel.

The driver pulled in off the highway in low gear but never bothered to shift heading down the hill. Which would have been ok had he used the brakes to help keep the speed down. Instead, he pushed the clutch in. You know that sound of a turbo spooling up. Imagine that sound X 100 as the straight cut gears in that old transmission spooled up til they just could not take any more!!

Oh what a mess that was.

Dropping a driveshaft or a transmission grenade on you on a steep down grade is one thing you only want to experience once. You might not survive the next time.
Big baldy also known as Cabbage pass in Eastern Oregon used and may still have signs posted on the down grade stating what gear and speed was the maximum safe speed for the number of axles and weight you had. Bigger engines with jake brakes and 18 speed or auto shift transmissions and better brakes have done a lot to alleviate downhill dangers, but you still don't want to go down Black Mountain at 60 MPH with a load of slinky. Unless you are as good as Sandra Bullock and can drive with half your wheels in the air.

Driven that many times, yes the warnings are still there. They are also on the Siskiyou Summit has similar warnings (drove that just a few weeks ago). You know when there are more than a one run-away truck ramp that the road is a challenge...

And you know in some states the cops are there for nothing but revenue collecting tools for corrupt Politian's when they are ordered to write a trucker a huge fine for having to use the emergency off ramps
