I've ridden the top of many older elevators, Crazy scarry the first couple times, The shaft ways are usually poorly lit if any of the lights work at all or even if there is any shaft way lighting at all and not all of the older elevators are even equipped with a serviceman's control and lockout panel on top of the car where you can plug in a control pendant
