Wasn't Elijah Otis' whole contribution to society automatic brakes for elevators so this can't happen? This is the stuff of nightmares.

While working today I watched two guys load a big pallet of beer kegs onto the 1300 kg capacity elevator at a major sports facility (19,000 capacity NHL arena), the elevator dropped a good four inches when the load crossed the threshold, the guys didn't even flinch, pressed the button and headed up to the 400 level....without me of course.

I had a friend who was a service technician, worked for Otis Elevator. He had some stories about equipment failures.

We have some newer elevators (lifts) that are suspended by rubber bands, the car's also twist due to their lightweight construction, sometimes I wonder if the older technology was better.

He was lucky not to have been sucked back into the elevator shaft as the car decended.

One of the most bizarre elevator accidents occurred in 1945 when a B-25 bomber crashed into the Empire State Building in New York City, the tallest building in the world at the time. The collision caused an elevator to fall 75 stories (300 meters/1000 feet). In the elevator was a 19-year-old elevator operator named Betty Lou Oliver. She survived with few injuries! It remains the Guinness World Record of the longest fall survived in an elevator.
