One of the most bizarre elevator accidents occurred in 1945 when a B-25 bomber crashed into the Empire State Building in New York City, the tallest building in the world at the time. The collision caused an elevator to fall 75 stories (300 meters/1000 feet). In the elevator was a 19-year-old elevator operator named Betty Lou Oliver. She survived with few injuries! It remains the Guinness World Record of the longest fall survived in an elevator.
