Tesla's Giga casting? It's a neat idea, but I've heard their yields are just atrocious. Somewhere around half of these go to scrap.

If some are good it's a process problem. I think they have something going here. Other established manufacturers are looking into the same things. That tells me there's something useful here. I think the machine cycle was made for filming. A lot of wasted time there. Look at me!

Absolutely. I think it probably has assembly and cost reduction value, even with really poor yields. What I do not like about this is direction that Tesla is taking the industry. They're leading the way on vehicle disposability, and exactly like you said other manufacturers are following suit. If massive castings like this develop cracks it could very well write the car off. And their new non-removable "structural" batteries are just awful. Very difficult or impossible to service. They're turning cars into cell phones that you throw away after a few years. I don't think there are going to be any Teslas driving around with Antique license plates in a few years.

Your cellphone reference is spot on. They are not repairable any longer because they have been made that way. I had a Samsung Note 2 for 4 years. Replaced the battery and kept on using it. Now I am stuck with my Note20 lasting as long as the battery survives. 2 years still ok. A car will last around 10 to 15 years. I just hate the idea of a company forcing us into planned obsolescence. To bad there are no governments with enough thinking ability to force the right to repair.
