Did you soften the file? There have been cases of tools made from (especially long ones like this) shattering into sharp shards. Given the forces that come into play with a roughing gouge, I'd want the metal to be quite different than in an unchanged file.

That the steel is not too hard, I soaked in part. This file now has the same consistency as HSS4.
