Back in the day before the big engines and popularity of exhaust brakes we had a saying. Use the same gear or at least the next lower gear to descend the hill as the one you went up it in. In today's world with engines powerful enough to top a grade at speed it is even more important to mentally calculate the grade versus distance against weight in selecting the proper gear selection to descend while using the exhaust braking system.
